A Little Humor Goes a Long Way

About nine years ago, I closed my studio after 20 years of painting and classes. It's taken what seems like a lifetime to find a new way to create that supports that feeling of discovery and expression I loved so much about my abstract work and commissions.
Now, my studio (an iPad or a Mac) is portable, much like a watercolors and a block. I can sit with someone and share the creative process over a cup of coffee or distract someone while waiting for news.
Today's scribble, "A Little Humor Goes a Long Way", was drawn with my dad when he was pretty freshly moved to a new place and under a lot of stress. I knew he wouldn't be in the mood for one of my happier scribbles, but when I saw a bit of Groucho in the scribble, I thought that would keep us busy, and it did.
Months later dad tells me he doesn't really 'get' the value of drawing scribbles, but he hasn't forgotten this design. For me, the scribbles represent whatever life hands us, and the drawing is all about what we choose to do with it. The kind of grit implied in this scribble was, for me, a meditation on getting through tough times, one scribble at a time.
